Modigliani painted Jeanne Hebuterne many times, including this image "Jeanne Hebuterne with Hat." This is probably best explained by the fact the she was the artist's partner (and an artist herself). Whether with or without a hat, Jeanne Hebuterne is a striking woman, with piercing blue eyes and long red brown hair; as with all of Modigliani's portraits, the large flat planes that he paints do not detract from her personality. Jeanne Hebuterne's personality has been described as gentle, quiet, and shy and she was so distressed when Modigliani died from tuberculosis that she threw herself from a fifth floor window.
