Amedeo Modigliani painted "Portrait of Thora Klinchowstrom" in about 1918, when he lived in Nice and earned his living by painting interior portraits of local shopkeepers. His life was eventful, to say the least. The earthy colors of this portrait echo the ochre and terracotta of southern France. Under that black hat, Thora seems to have a mass of auburn hair, and there's a definite flush in her cheeks. Modigliani was a very attractive man, so perhaps Mme Klinchowstrom was not as solemn as she has been portrayed. This portrait will set you thinking, as well as bringing the warmth of the Mediterranean to your home.
