Emilia Van Nest Markovich
Emilia Van Nest Markovich was raised in New York. She is proud to be a descendant of Dutch and Puerto Rican parents who were very supportive of her artistic endeavors. The artist received a BFA in Painting from the University of New Mexico and live

Markovich achieves highly saturated color and contrast working with chalk pastels on black paper, rendering symbolic imagery in rich surface marks. Markovich believes her work communicates emotional connections and feelings of personal place through color and symbolism. Says the artist, ?The personal ideas expressed in my work originate from environmental and domestic space and the interactions and relationships between objects. I have created a vocabulary of shapes and markings that convey a theme of deep emotion and meaning. The contrast between the chalk pastel colors and the muted black paper helps to create a rich surface application. Most work contains symbolic imagery, shapes that are familiar in the domestic environment, yet esoteric in placement, form, size and color. I work the initial concept into a composition of space and shapes. Then layers of color and distinct patterning are introduced. The work usually changes numerous times until a certain energy and tension is achieved." Nationally, Markovich's artwork is included in many corporate and private collections throughout the U.S.. Several of her pieces were purchased by the State of Colorado for the Art in Public Places program. She is now represented by galleries in Boulder, Denver, and Chicago. Markovich currently resides in Littleton, Colorado and teaches art in the Aurora Public Schools where she has received awards for outstanding service. « see less
