Ansel Adams, 1902-1984
Photographer Ansel Adams was born in San Francisco, CA, in 1902, and was trained as a concert pianist. Inspired as a child by a trip to Yosemite National Park, his main subjects for over 60 years were America's western and mountain landscapes. Noted for his use of light, form and texture, he was awarded three Guggenheim grants to photograph the country's national parks.
...see more »Within his profession, he was recognized as a leader, concerned with image and process quality at all stages of artistic creation. He co-founded a professional association, the f/64 Group, in 1932 and in 1940 helped organize the photography department in New York City's Museum of Modern Art. Ansel Adams also wrote and lectured extensively on conservation and technical subjects, publishing more than 30 books. He believed: "No man has the right to dictate what other men should perceive, create or produce, but all should be encouraged to reveal themselves, their perceptions and emotions, and to build confidence in the creative spirit." He was Director of the Sierra Club from 1934 to 1971 and awarded the American Medal of Freedom in 1980.« see less
