Henri Matisse Introduction
Henri Emile Benoit Matisse was born December 31, 1869, in Le Cateau-Cambresisi, in northern France, the son of a grain merchant. He studied law and became a law clerk, starting to paint during his convalescence after a serious illness when he was 21 years old. He attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was influenced by impressionists Pisarro, Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Gauguin.
